Question:
Does shaving unwanted body hair makes it grow back thicker and darker?
Answer:
No! Shaving hair never change its thickness or color. The color, location, thickness and length of hair on your body mainly depend on genetics and hormones. After you shave body hair, it may feel coarse or "stubbly" for a time as it grows out. During this phase, it may be more noticeable — and may appear darker or thicker. But it's not!
FAQ: What can I expect at a laser hair removal treatment?
How long will it take?: The length of a session may range from a few minutes to an hour
or more depending on the size of the area being treated. How long the
procedure takes depends on the area of the body involved. A small area
such as the upper lip may only take a few minutes. A larger area such as
the back or legs may require closer to an hour.
How many treatments?: Since the laser tends to treat hair follicles that are in an active growth phase, more than one treatment is required to disable hair follicles that subsequently enter this growth phase. In our clinic we recommend a series of 8 treatments for optimal results.
What happens in a procedure?: Laser light will be delivered through a hand held piece attached to a laser console. You will be given sterilized goggles to wear to protect your eyes from accidental exposure to laser light. You also may notice an odor of singed hair throughout your treatment, which is normal and also a good sign that the laser is being effective.
How does it feel?: Laser treatment itself may cause a slight tingling sensation. Most patients tolerate the procedure very well. Be sure to communicate your comfort level to the nurse treating you so that you can work together to meet your individual needs.
What to expect post-treatment: The appearance of the treated area immediately after the laser session will vary from patient to patient depending on the extent of treatment and skin type. Immediate after-effects, if any, are minor. They may include redness and swelling, which disappear in a short time. Most people return to normal activity right away. We recommend that you refrain from sun exposure (outside or in a tanning bed) for a week after being treated.

Why do we do it? A short history of hair removal
No one knows when humans first engaged in the practice of hair removal. Rudimentary attempts at shaving can be traced back to prehistoric cave drawings in which depictions of men appeared without beards or 
other facial hair. Egyptian males were known to have shaved both their faces and their heads so that in a combat situation a smooth head and face deprived the enemy of a handhold grip with which to behead his victim.
The majority of early immigrants to the United States were of European origin, who did not transfer the practice of hair removal to American society. Thus, hair removal had to be introduced, explained, and marketed to Americans in order to become a common practice.
Women didn’t shave their armpits before about 1915 because no one
ever saw that part of their body. Even the word “underarm” was considered scandalous before that time. Fashion designers started making dresses without sleeves, and an ad in Harper’s Bazaar
said that to wear the style, women first needed to attend to “the
removal of objectionable hair.”
The 1920s definition of the female body allowed for greater freedom in
fashion, but also demanded a new awareness of the physical self. In
addition to the “unveiling” of the female body, the 1920s saw the
introduction of a litany of beauty practices including the regular use
of makeup, the introduction of the bra, the practice of dieting, and
the removal of visible body hair.
Fast forward to modern times when most women see hair removal as a necessity. Most insist on removing leg hair before putting on a skirt or shorts, and balk at the thought of wearing a bathing suit without shaving or waxing the bikini line. Hair removal is considered so essential that many refuse to participate in daily activities such as exercising or going on a date if they have not paid proper attention to removing their body hair. We have come a long way in the past century!

Trends change like the wind. But it seems this one has some staying power. Gone are the days of lusting after Burt Reynold's full mustache and sweater chest.
